The Challenge
The Kenyan government sought to improve the quality of vocational education across 11 local schools by upgrading classrooms and enhancing teacher training. The goal was to ensure better learning outcomes by equipping educators with stronger didactic skills and up-to-date technical knowledge. In addition to reconfiguring classrooms for effective practical training, teachers needed specialized coaching to deliver high-quality instruction and support students in achieving certification.
Our Approach
Innovam developed a tailored training and advisory program to meet Kenya’s specific needs. The approach included:
- Classroom setup guidance, balancing local constraints with best practices for vocational training.
- On-site assessment in Kenya, where Innovam trainers identified the most practical solutions for the schools.
- Intensive teacher training in the Netherlands, focusing on modern teaching techniques and technical expertise.
- Ongoing coaching in Kenya, ensuring that the trained educators could successfully transfer their knowledge to colleagues and sustain improvements long-term.
A key element of the project was the "train-the-trainer" approach, where a core group of Kenyan educators took part in hands-on training in the Netherlands before leading the wider knowledge transfer back home. This approach maximized the impact and ensured sustainable change.
The Impact
Through this initiative, all 11 vocational schools improved their practical training facilities, and teachers adopted modern instructional methods tailored to local conditions. The trained educators not only improved their own skills but also played a crucial role in scaling up the changes across other schools in Kenya.
By combining local insights, international expertise, and ongoing coaching, Innovam helped create a sustainable training model that continues to enhance vocational education quality in Kenya.
