The Challenge
As part of its transition to cleaner maritime propulsion, shipping company AG Ems converted its vessel, MS Ostfriesland, to run on LNG fuel. To raise awareness among passengers about this sustainable innovation, AG Ems and maritime knowledge institute Mariko sought an engaging way to educate travelers on board. The goal was to provide interactive, accessible information while making the learning experience enjoyable for all ages.
Our Approach
Innovam developed an Augmented Reality (AR) app that allows ferry passengers to explore LNG technology in a dynamic and engaging way. The app, which can be downloaded via the ship’s onboard WiFi, offers multiple learning touchpoints through:
- QR hotspots placed around the ship, activating AR content when scanned.
- 3D visualizations of the vessel, allowing passengers to explore its design and technology.
- Educational insights into LNG propulsion, the Wadden Sea, and other maritime sustainability initiatives.
- An interactive quiz, encouraging passengers to test their knowledge and become an official AG EMS Ambassador.
By using Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality techniques, Innovam made complex maritime technology more accessible, engaging, and visually intuitive for passengers.
The Impact
The AR app transformed passive travel time into an educational experience, allowing passengers to gain insight into LNG propulsion in an entertaining and interactive way. By making hidden technology visible through 3D models and animations, Innovam successfully enhanced understanding of sustainable maritime innovations.
This project demonstrated how digital learning tools can be effectively integrated into real-world settings, making technical knowledge more engaging and ensuring that sustainability efforts are communicated in an impactful way. The success of this initiative highlights the potential of Augmented and Virtual Reality in knowledge transfer across industries.
